ONE HUNDRED TO BE ERECTED. Authority for the erection of 100 workers' homes having been given by Cabinet, tho.Workers' Dwellings Board of the Labour Department has considered -the applications in hand, and decided to proved'with the following building proCTammeFrankton Junction ,3 dwellings, Napier 4, Hastings 8, Palnlerston North 6, Masterton 2, "Westport «1, Chnstchiircb 10, Hawera 6, Te Awanvutu G, Marion 5, Oamaru 1, on the only remaining section. In all probability ' a number ol houses will be erected, at Tokomaru Bay, and arrangements are practically completed for about sis at Kaikoura. In Auckland it was found that houees were not scarce, and the cost of building would be somewhat greater than in . normal times, so that it is probable' that , no dwellings will be erected there for , the time being. In' - Wellington tho Department is arranging to build on several of the remaining sections at Xaitville, two or three allotments beins still vacant. In all about eighty applications have been approved, and tho remainder of the 100 authorised will be arranged for at a later date. The Department has land available at all places for which applications have been granted, except Tokomaru, Te Awamutn, Marlon, and Kaikoura. INow that these particular applications have been approved, the applicants, where land is available, will make their selection of sections and house designs. Afterwards they will meet the architect of the Department for the purpose of"deciding on the exact specifications. Estimates of cost Will be prepared and tenders called. .If these are not too high, the erection of tho houses will 'be proceeded with at once. Where no land is at present available, tho Department will first raako inquiries for suitable areas, and arrange : for survey and roading. It is not intended to purchase a greater area than is at present'required, otherwise sections may Tcmain on tlio hands of the Departmeat for some years.
