p-— ' (Continued from Page 2) ' VICTORIA LEAGUE CLUB THE OVERSEAS FORCES. , The Club for Dominion and Colonial Soldiers, organised by tho Victoria League, was opened on Juno 3. Lord Kitchener, who had been asked to perform the ceremony, was prevented by his engagements from doing so, but in his place Lord Grenfell declared the club open (states the journal of the Victoria League). The club rooms had) been made as comfortable as possible. Pictures had been lent by tlireo well-known artists, and one by tho director of the Tato Gallery, while generous donors had sent books and bookcases, a carpet, chairs, tables, cushions, trays, - waste paper baskets, and, last but not least, hampers of beautiful floweis, to make the rooms thoroughly bright and home-like for the men. The buffet, where light refreshments are to be bought at cost price, is served by relays of lady volunteers, among whom are included several overseas members who are at present in London.. There is a room for billiards and. other games, plenty of writing tables,, and newspapers 'of. tho different parts of the Empire. Tho Bureau of Information, will, it is hoped, meet a real need. The first response to the appeal of the executive for money to equip and run the club had been ready and generous. The opportunity of expressing in tangible form their appreciation of the help and support, both moral and • material, that, had come from overseas, was eagerly grasged by those at honte. The first list of subscriptions, to Slay'3l, showed a total of £1969. Donations of £100.each had) come from the Australian and New Zealand War Contingent Associations, and a generous gift of £150 from Lady Drummond, of Sfontreal, otherwise the subscriptions come from the home members of the league and tho Ladies' Empire Club and their friends. The opening- ceremony took place on June 3, in the presence of about 300 members of the league and the Ladies' Empire Club. A number of representa- 1 tive overseas people and Dominions 1 soldiers .also attended. 1 Among those present were the High Commissioners j for Canada and New Zealand, the Agents-General for New South Wales, 1 South Australia, and Western Australia, for Quebec,' Alberta, Nova Scotia ' and British Columbia; Captain.
