A USEFUL APPOINTMENT
The National Ministry is_ to be congratulated on the step it has taken .to keep in closer touch with our troops at the front. It also is to be complimented on the choice of so painstaking and thorough an' officer as Colonel R. H. Rhodes, late Postmaster-General, to carry out the investigations proposed and_ to make the arrangements required. At the present time there are weaknesses in a number of directions, duo mainly to the tremendous pressure under which those stationed at the base in Egypt and in the Hospital Department are working. Colonel Rhodes will inquire into and report on such matters as the supply of information regarding the wounded and missing, the accommodation and treatment of the wounded, the return of the sick and wounded to New Zealand, the mail and postal services, and indeed practically all those questions of immediate personal concern to our troops in the field and their relatives and friends in New Zealand. No doubt as a result of his investigations he will be able to suggest better means by which relatives in. the Dominion can be kept in touoli with the condition of sick and wounded soldiers; and in addition it will give satisfaction to everyone to know that a responsible officer is being sent to see that nothing is left undone that can be' done for the welfare of our gallant men.
