NAVY LEAGUE
MEETING OF WELLINGTON BRANCH. , The annual meeting of the Wellington branch of the Navy League was held yesterday in the Town Hall. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided. Apologies for . absence were : received from His Excellency the Governor, Sir Joseph and Lady Ward, 1 and- several other prominent citizens., In opening the meeting the Mayor remarked that it was rather disappointing to find such a small attendance. The speaker went cn to review the splendid work of the British Navy during the present great war and tue, great services rendered by the Australian naval unit. . Speaking of the sentimental side of the great war, the speaker pointed out how Britain had upheld her great traditions of the past. 'How,different it w.as with whose'inhuman condiiot would stand ever to her shame. In conclusion tho Mayor said that it was only fitting that the meeting should place on record its .undoubted trust and confidence in the British Navy. The annual report and 1 balance-sheet were' then adopted on the motion of the Mayor. A motion of appreciation of the wholehearted work of the secretary of the society (Mr. C. AV. Palmer) and other officers of . the society, including Mr. R. ; Darrocli, was carried. , The, secretary stated that .two letters expressing warm appreciation of the society's work had been received by him from Lord Phmkot and Lord Islington. On the motion of tho chairman it was decided to send a letter of appreciation and admiration to Captain, Halsey, of H.M.S. New Zealand, of the magnificent work of the captain and his officers and men during tho present war. Officers were elected as follow for the ensuing year:—President, His AVorship the-Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke); vice-presi-dents, the Right Hon. Sir Joseph AVard, the Hon. AVm. Fraser, M.'P.; Sir J. G. Findlay, Sir AValter Buchanan, Messrs. J. G. AA 7 . Aitkcn, G. Shirtcliffe, J. P. Firth,' J! B. Harcourt, T. M. AVilford, M.P.; secretary, Mr. C. AV. Palmer; treasurer, Mr. R. Darroch; committee, Messrs. J. B. Harcourt (chairman), R. Darroch, C. AV. Palmer, D. M'Kellar, A. H. Miles, A. F.<'AViren, Roberts, C. R. Smith, and Bullock, and Major D. M.j Poison aud Captain R. L. Evatt.
