. THE CRYSTALATE CUP. • The people who viewed the two games last night at Messrs. Alcock and Coin? pany's showrooms had the pleasure of witnessing closely and keenly-contested matches. The first two- at the table were E. W. AYarren (Commercial Travellers' Club) and.A. Wakem (Dominion Club), tho former .player securing a win bv 6 points. Warren, was the .first, w get going, and was never headed irom. tlie start. Still, his opponent, by steady and intelligent play,' almost made a win for himself. The treat of the evening was undoubtedly tlio game between J. H.' Owen (Wellington Club) ■ anjl A. J. Congden (Commercial and Fanners' Club, Mastertou), the former winning. Both players are very capablo exponents, and possess much greater than ordinary knowledge of the game. ■ Mr. Owen, however, is somewhat out of practice, and his cueing was not at all np to his usuaLstaiulard. Still, ho has not- lost aey of his generalship. and time and again his head work made amends for other deficiencies. Congden's play was undoubtedly disappointing, as he frequently failid in his shots, leaving his opponent beautiful scoring positions. Unfortunately, this player is only just recovering from a severe bout of influenza. No startling breaks were made, the best Tfeing: Warren 68 and 3Q, and Owen 26, 20, 27, and 20. To-night, W. N. Tucker plays Keys, and H. Shanks plays P. Devine.
