, '-PROTEST AGAINST ALTERATION. . "Last evening a meeting of representatives of Wellington sports bodies was held ,to consider tho proposal to make considerable alterations to tho Basin Re- . serve. Mr. C. G. Wilson (ehaitmaJi of the Wellincton Cricket Association) presided. ; Other ! representatives - were: Messrs; M.-l'YCrombie (Cricket Associ- ■ ation); W.' Auld and W. Wells (Wellington Football Association), A. E. Bennett- (Hockey Association), A. A. ■Marriott and J. C. Cusack (Amateur Athletic Association).' ;. / : ■The proposed alteration will, according to : the- sports represents-' tives, reduce the . playing area from six acres to 'five -acres, and a-half.. The tramline ; will, be run through tho eastern side of th»'Reserve.. " The bank on-the western sido will be'cut away to the level of the playing ground, and a 1 grandstand, to hold 1500 people, will be erected back against the western fence.. There will be only a strip of ten feet o£ ground room for the public to walk about on, or viowi matches, from., . A Bill to give the Wellington City Corporation power to make these alter-, atlons is to be considered by Parliament very shortly, and the. meeting thought that in the meantime everything-should be',done to prevent such, a course as tho Bill proposed being made possiblo. ■City Councillors G. Frost.' and .L. : M'Kenzie were present as opponents of the scheme.. .-, -v. ' - The meeting Tesolved to; give evidence before the Local Bills .Committee .'.of the House of Representatives, ind in this action to invito tho co-operation of the Sports' Protection League; also to deputationiso the Wellington City poimcil, and to invito the public to support the deputation.
