MAGISTRATE'S COURT
SIX MEN FINED FOR CONVEYING LIQUOR, INTO CAMP Six labourers employed at Trentham Camp filed into the dock of the Magistrate's Court, before Mr. D. G. A. Ccoper, S.M., on Saturday, and all admitted conveying liquor into Trentham Camp on .Friday. Inspector Hendrey said that.the six men, David Kerr, Daniel Galloway, Walter Kydd,: James O'Connor, Robert Corke, and Arthur Taylor, had been discovered by the military police the previous evening at Trentham. Each of the accused had either whisky or beer in his possession. One had a bottle of whisky suspended down' the leg of his trousers. The Inspector added that the offence was looked upon by the authorities as a serious one, as evidenced by the fact that the maximum penalty was £20. The Magistrate remarked that _ he thought enough puhlicityhad been given to the fact that it was an offence which would be heavily penalised to' take liquor into Trentham Camp. Each accused would be fined £5, in default one month's imprisonment. The liquor was ordered to,- be forfeited.
' ALLEGED CRUELTY OF A HUSBAND. ' Evidence was partially heard in connection with the case in which Arthur Blackett was charged with assaulting Leila Blackett, his wife. On behalf of the prosecutors, the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, Mr. R. H. Webb said that the case was a most pitiful one. The informant had been badly ill-treated by her husband. On a recent evening the husband lay in wait for his wife and as she was. about to enter the house in which they lived he struck her with a stick. Corroborative evidence was given by Mrs.'Blackett as to her husband's cruelty and neglect. Defendant emphatically denied the statements of informants, and the Magistrate adjourned' the case until Monday, when further evidence will be called. Bail was refused to accused.

Corintliic named William James Warn was sent to gaol for a. month, on a charge of deserting from that vessel. ■ Richard James Mildenhall was. remanded to appear at Dunedin oil April 25' on a change, of failing to maintain his child. * For insobriety Lucy Mitchell was fined £1, in default three days' imprisonment, and Ethel Brewster was fined 10s., or 48 hours' imprisonment. .Five first offenders were dealt with, one, a trooper, being convicted and ordered to be handed over to tJio military authorities.
