ON THE EASTERN. FRONT
PROGRESS OF THE GERMAN OFFENSIVE (Rec. August 23, 0.5 a.m.) Amsterdam, August 22. A' German communiquo states:— "Finhtinu in Eastern Kovno, wo took 450 Russians, and captured five guns.. "Tho enemy has evacuated Jessia, and is retreating eastward. . "We stormed the positions near Gudelo Sejmy, 610 Russians being taken prisoners. . "In the fighting westward of Tykocin, General von Gallwittz occupied Bielsk, and, advancing southward, threw tho Russians across the 1 Biala. _ Prince Leopold on Friday; night broke the enemy's renewed resistance. The enemy to-day is further retreating. Ono thousand.were taken prisoners. General von Mackensen's left-wing has advanced to the confluence of tho Bue and the Puhva. Tho enemy continues to retreat. We have; further progressed before Brest Litowsk and eastward of Vloda." THE RUSSIAN COMMUNIQUE (Rec. August 23, 0.15 a.m.) Petrograd, August 21. Official.—"After the German occupation of Kovno, the garrison joined with the field troops. Our troops still hold the left bank of tho Niemen, south of Kovno. . The Germans suongly attacked the entire front from Ossowiec along the Upper Narew and the Bug./ We held tho enemy on several sectors. "Tho enemy has occupied the right bank of the Bug east of Vlodava, and' niado continued attacks in the direction of Pichticha. The Germans, after occupying the left bank of the Skowih at Novo-Georgievsk, concentrated all their efforts between the Skreva and tho_ Vistula, and destroyed tlio fortifications' on this scction by an uninterrupted bombardment. "There was a ■ perfect. hurricane of projectiles. The troops surrounded the .Vyinysloff fort, and attacked the fortifications., Despite enormous losses wo were obliged to withdraw on the night of tho nineteenth to tho old forts. Fronting the central defences.' Tho Germans destroyed two of these forts and occupied tho ruins by. a 6eries of sanguinary assaults, they next bombarded the central defence. W6 blew up tho Narew bridge and abandoned the forts of tho northern section."
'AUSTRIAN COMMUNIQUE. (Rec. August 23, 0.10 a.m.) Amsterdam, August' 21. An Austrian' official message states; "Tho Austro-German advance on BrestLitovsk lias caused considerable portions of several Russian armies to crowd the precincts of the fortress. The enemy; in order to secure a north-easterly withdrawal of his troops and supply columns, whose line of retreat is restricted to a few crossings, offers a strong resistance west of the fortress on both sides of the river., Nevertheless, the north wing of our seige troops have captured several advance positions east of Rokitno. "We stormed the enemy's trenches at Wolczyn. on the north, bank of the Bug. General von Koevess is advancing towards the Upper Bulwa."-
