•The fall of'the great Russian fortress of Novo-Georgievsk is announced to-day, and its capture has involved the loss of a very large' nutiiber of men and munitions. The military moralists are now stress- ' ing the folly of defending fortresses against the destructive fire of ' modem' siege artillery. Colonel Repington, the "Times" military correspondent, considers that the situation on the Eastern front is grave, arid that the next ten days are fraught, with events of tremendous moment. To add to the problems of-the Russians, a German fleet has penetrated the Gulf of Riga, and a naval battle.is-now in progress.
