N.Z. TROTTING OLIJ.B GUARANTEES £1000. (By Telegrauh.—Press Association.) Chrfstchurch, August 21. _'At a mooting of the committee of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club tlie following resolution was carried:— "That the net profits of the club for the season 1915-16 from date be voted to the Wounded and Returned Soldiers' Fund, and that the club guarantees the same will not be loss than £1000."

Word was received in Wellington last evening by friends of Sister Edith Popplewell. who left Wellington by tie Hospital Shin Maheno for active duty -abroad,, that she had been appointed to the New Zealand Hospital at Port Said. A very successful entertainment was given by the .teachers and pupils of lona College, Havelock North) on Thursday,_ for tlie benefit of the Belgium Relief Funds. The programme presented scenes from Dickens, national dances from various - countries in costume. and several musical _ and vocal items, and at its conclusion posters painted by some of tho pupils were put up for auction. In all the concert realised a little over £300.

Mrs. Blundell and Mrs, Nelson, who have been visiting Napier, left on their return to Wellington on Friday. 1 Mr. and Mrs. Harold Beauchamp are visiting Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Rathbone, of Hawke's Bay, are visiting Auckland. " .Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Hailes, of Chartlea Station, Southland, accompanied by Miss Dunne, have been visiting Rotorua and Te Aroha.

Mrs. 'Agnes Salisbury, a- very old resident of Greytown, died at her residence on Friday morning at the age of 51. She leaves two daughters and one son (who is at the Dardanelles).
