The news from the Eastern front to-day announces the fall of Kovno—carried by assault/with terrific losses to the Germans. The Russian communique, referring to the event, indicates that the whole of the works have not yet been carried. The • Austro-G'erman offensive in the south is within rangd of the fortress artillery of Brest-Litovsk, An attempt by the Germans to assume tho offensivo in the Dvinsk region was sharply checked by the Russians. 3n Gallipoli; there has been further fighting, with a fresh gain in the region of Suvia Bay, north of Gaba Tepe. Tile Australians and' New Ze'alanders have been heavily attacked by the Turks, but repulsed the enemy with loss. The Turks are feverishly fortifying Smyrna against an attack tho nature of which is not yet indicated. There is very little to report from the Western front. In the Austro-Italian theatre tho Italians have made good progress in the land Campaign, ■and have successfully withstood a strong Austrian, naval attack on their supply base on'the Island of Pelagosa. Public feeling in the United States has been roused to an'angry pitch by the disclosures in the. "Providenco Journal" regarding the German campaign of espion- . ago and sedition in America, and there has been a fiorce outburst of denunciation in the leading columns of representative newspapers.
