POLICEMAN IN TROUBLE
OHAEGED WITH BREAKING 'AND ENTERING. (Br Tel«jrMh.-Prp^ . . Dunedln, August 19. John Henry Howard, a policeman, appeared at the Police Court this morning to answer charges—(l) Of breaking and entering a butcher's shop with intent to 'commit ■ a crime; (2) breaking and entering the same; shop and com-, mitting a crime, therein,, and (3) that lie did by night willfully damage a pane of glass. . ' Sub-Inspector Broberg said acused, until this, morning, was a member of the police force at South Duhedin. Rocently a series of thefts of meat had been committed at the shop in question. On August 5 the proprietor set a watch, and as a result Howard was suspected The matter was reported to the Superintendent of .Police,i-and 4 another watch was set, and shortly after *5 this morning Howard was seen to enter the shop by-a back .door, using a key. SeniorSergeant s Dart then entered the shop, ; and .'Howard dropped a bag. containing 1 a ' leg of mutton , and .dived through 1 a plate glass window. He. admitted the ' offences. , ' Accused was, remanded till the 27th. Bail was refused.
