PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

GEOLOGICAL SECTION. The annual meeting of the geological section of the Wellington Philosophical • Society was held last night at the Dominion Museum. There was a good attendance of members and visitors, Tho annual report, which was adopted, stated that tho Geological Section had had a very; successful year, and might now bo said to. have thoroughly justified_ ifs existence. On two occasions during the year i/he section had been fortunate enough to be addressed by visiting geologists of note. On September 16, 1914, Professor W. M. Davis (late of Harvard University) addressed 1 the section on tho subject of "The Coasts of New Caledonia." On March 81, 1915, Professor J. P. Iddings (late of the University of Chicago and bow ■ connected with the United States Geological Survey), one of . the worlds leading authorities on problems ill petrology, addressed the sectioii, talcing' as his subject "Tho Mechanics 6f Igneous Intrusion." During the year many interesting exhibits had 1 been made, including rock, mineral, and fossil specimens ' seismograms, photographs, and new books. Mr. R. W. Holmes in particular. bad taken much trouble in providing interesting exhibits. The folio win" papers had been read: J. A-Thomson: "The Geology of tho Waihao District, South Canterbury," "The Tertiary Geology of the Waipara District, North Canterbury," "lypes of Folding in tho Terobratulacee," and '"The Amuri Limestone'and Flint Series of Marlborough." Dr. C. A. Cotton: "Fault Coasts: Examples in Marlborough and Wellington." Mr. P. G. Morgan: "The Weka Pass District." Mr. J. .A. Thomson: ' "Evolutionary Stocks in New Zealand Tertiary Brachiopoda. Mr. F. K. Broadgato: "The Red Rocks and Associated Beds in Wellington Peninsula " Tho following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Chairman, Mr. G Hogben, C.MG., M.A., G.G.S.: vicechairman, Dr. C. A. Cotton, D.Sc., F.G.S.; secretary, Dr. J. Allan Thomson, M.A., D.So., F.G.S, A.0.5.M.; committee, Dr J. Henderson, M.A., D.So., Mr. R, W. Holmes, M.lnst.C.E., Mr. P. G. Morgan, M.A., F.G.S., Mr. W. Gibson, 8.E., A.0.5.M., and Mr. M. Ongley, M.A. A paper on the "Structure of the Paparoa Range" (in western Nelson) wa3 read by Dr. Henderson,, of tho Geological Survey, who has, both during his former residence in Reefton and also since lie joined the Geological Survey, given' much time to the study of that interesting district. Dr. Henderson's paper gave rise to an interesting discussion.
