Press opinion, commenting on tho loss, says that an event of this kind is so rare that the public is apt to be more • disconcerted, by it when it does happen than tho actual millitary valuo of the misliap merits. Meanwhile the position of the Turks on the Gallipoli Peninsula appears to be getting more and more delicate. On the Russian front tremendous attacks have been launched against the . big Russian fortress at Kovno and Novo • Georgievsk, and the enemy has gained a footing in one of the outer works of Kovno. The Russians are Laving tho better of the duel in the Baltic Provinces, so far as the land campaign is concerned, and in the meantime tho Germans aro'trying to establish their superiority in the Gulf of Riga. Politi- . cal events in Greece have reached a point where M. Venizelos is about to form a Cabinet.
