RECRUITING
REASONS FOR ORGANISING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, August 11. In tlio course of nn interview'on D&feiice matters and recruiting, the Hon. James Allen said: "We do not want to take away men usefully employed in Dur manufactories and- industries generally, especially those who are working at manufactures connected with: wants of the war. .We do not want to take these men away if it can ba helped, for they are as much use to us m the workshops and manufactories as in the trenches. It is for that reason wo are organising in regard to the supply of workers. Wo must get to know what men can be spared from busi- : nesses and factories without upsetting things, and tho«e who _ can. be spared must be spared, especially unmarried men. I do. not believe there are many shirkers in New Zealand, when it comes to the point. Some may be lazy and indifferent, but when they come to know what it means and what is at stake they will lend a hand for the honour of New Zealand." A rumour has been current that a wharf labourer died at the Dunedin Hospital last week from cerebrospinal meningitis. We find on inquiry (states the "Qtago Daily Times") that this is not correct. Apparently the foundation for tlio rumour- lay in the fact that .a carrier was admitted to the Hospital suffering from blood poisoning., which developed from a scratch on a finger. A post mortem examination revealed tlio presence of tlio germ of corcbro-spuial meningitis in the man's tliroat, but it is stated authoritatively that he did not succumb to this disease. ' ===== i
