SOLDIERS' CABLE MESSAGES
6 REASONS FOR NON-DELIVERY. Following is tho text of a communication from tho general manager cf the Eastern Extension Cable Co. (Mr. Webster) at Adelaide to the company's representative in Now Zealand respecting the complaints of nou-delivery to . soldiers at tlie front (Egypt and Gallipoli) of cable messages:— "Reference having been made ill Parliament and Press to tho non-delivery ol numerous messages from and to troops for which the company was to some extent held responsible, I wired London asking for short explanation of procedure in Egypt for the satisfaction of tho public, and have received the following reply-'No' blame attributable to companies, who are making every, effort to ensure delivery. Greatest difficulty being experienced, -owing to constant changes' from hospital camps, convalescent homes, and to front, and inability to obtain reliable information 'from the military authorities. British and Australian record offices regularly appealed to with very partial success. The Alexandria station is working in conjunction with the Red Cross Association, and is endeavouring to effect the delivery of telegrams r.ot accepted at the addresses given. All telegrams from tho front are received at Alexandria by post, and go forward as from Alexandria. Replies are addressed to Alexandria, and having no military authority who will accept, responsibility non-delivery results in many cases. No difficulty with New Zealand messages owing to the assistance given at base records' and headquarters.' "
