3 A REDUCTION IN MELBOURNE. JBy Tekgrash—Press Association—Copyright 3 Melbourne, August 17. f The wholesale prioo of butter has been' i reduced 3d.—to Ib. lOd. The reduction a is due to the fact that New. Zealand ip - permitting export. ; STATEMENT BY MR. MASSEY. ? It is not the fact, as apparently it' is presumed in Australia, that New I Zealand is permitting the export of butter. In reply to a question on the subject yesterday, the Prime Minister 1 stated that some weeks ago the export' i of butter from New Zealand had bean j prohibited, except with the consent of ' the Minister of Customs (who is now '• Mr. A. M. Myers). : This permission was only- to be grant- ' ed in -special circumstances, arid no \ special circumstances had arisen to make it advisable to allow export to be re- [ BUmed. / t "I am not satisfied," said Mr. Mas- ; Bey "that -there is enough butter in. New Zealand to justify us in allowing ■ export, but I think that bv the end [ of tlio month we shall bo able to lift tW : prohibition altogether." r Will you wait until some definite . price i 3 reached before export is allow. ; ed? Mr. Massey was asked, i Mr. Massey: I don't think.that will > be necessary. The thing will regulate . itself. My own opinion is that butter . will not be as clieap during the coming , season as it lias been. In England the price of butter is very much higher than it has been of late years, but on the other hand the price of cheese, very, high until recently, has fallen. _ When the season opens here the price in New; Zealand will be regulated by ,the prioa in England. In reply to another question Mr. Massey said the high price of butter in New Zealand now was owing to local scarcity, and not to high prices elsewhere. He believed! that present; prices must come down. A deputation of natives waited upon the Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald in Gisborne to submit a request that the! Government accept tna services of. uative girls to assist in nursing tha Maori soldiers at the front. The deputation was a large one, and Lady Carroll and others spoke in its support. In the course of his reply, Mr. Mac Donald eaid it was very gratifying to him, and to the Government generally, to notipa the keen interest the native race waa taking in the great war. They were proud of the fact that as soon as it was known that there was going to be trouble, the natives had come forward to offer men, money; and food. The Maori soldiers had done credit to their, ancestors and the people of New Zea-i land. He keenly appreciated their de-' sire to send nurses to the front, and so far as he possibly could he would try. and get the request acceded to. They had to remember, however, that at the present time those in authority thought it was essential only to have trained nurses. The Government had to listen to the counsel of those in authority. If they could not accede to the request t< tend untrained girls when the next. Maori contingent left, he hoped thej would bo able to send of the excellent trained native nurses. He would, place the matter before th© Minister r&i sponsible for these matters. More business? Yes! But you must qualify for it.
