THE NATIONAL REGISTER
'A SIMPLE SCHEME. The Prime Minister informed a r>> porter yesterday that tho Bill to pro* vide for the taking of a national regis* ter had been drawn, ready for submission to Cabinet. Mf. Massey said that after the Bill was passed by Parliamenb the work of compiling the register would be done by tho Registrar-General's Department. His own part for the present was simply to prepare the legislai tion. In reply to questions as to the procedure it was proposed to follow in obtain* ing the necessary information, Mr.-Mas-sev said that tho intention was to make use of the Post Office. The procedure would not be nearly so elaborate as that followed in the compilation of the census. He also stated that his Bill was much simpler than the English Bill or the Australian Bill, and was an improvement upon them in that respect, • he thought. The more simple ana direct the questions were made the mora, likely the Government would be to ge f ready and correct answers.
