SHELLING ANZAC
r MOONLIGHT BATHING FAVOURED. Writing from Anzac on June 28, Sergeant lveith Little, of the Headquarters Staff, narrates as follows: — "For tlie past week —in fact sinco tho forces south mado a successful ad- , vance—we have been subjected to a good deal of. shelling, and at times we have been in constant' danger of being hit. Tlie enemy has been throwing larger shells than visual, and in conspquenco very little swimming is done in the daylight. The thousands who used to swim in the sunshine iiow come down and swim in the moonlight, which is very pleasant as the water is quite warm. The other afternoon I was hit with a shrapnel pellet. The effect ivas as though someone had given me a good punch l . The following day another clerk received a pellet on tho knee, which made a very ugly bruise. Tho weather continues fine, and I am enjoying tho best of (rood health. But it is awfully liot. We always look forward to sunset, which, by tho way, is very late in the evening, compared with New Zealand, and then it is great to sit at the dug-out,door and enjoy the evening breeze thai comes gently up from the placid bosom of tli6 Aegean Sea. "This morning there is a furious bombardment going on down south. It is stated that our forces are making another advance. We can seo the shells bursting 011 the hills from here, and it appears as though the enemy is getting more than enough. Tliero was a Zepnelin scare here tlie other night, bnt so far nothing has occurred. Yesterday the oneiny mado an advance 011 one of our positions, but were repulsed. ' They were assisted by heavy artillery from tho south. . . Wo now' get an issue of bread every other day, and generally speaking wo fare pretty well in the food line." [Since tho above was written Sergt. Little has been invalided to Cairo.]
