Patriotic Entertainment at Kliandallah. Oil Saturday afternoon a very enjoyable entertainment, under tlio auspices of the Young CJirls' Patriotic Committee, ivas held in the Town Hall, Khaudallali, in aid of tho Wounded Soldiers' Fund. Tlio efforts of the promoters met with a very hearty response from the residents of tho district, with tlio result that the hall was particularly well tilled. .Air. R. A. Wright, M.P., in a short speech referred 'to the aim of tlio concert and to tho present international crisis. Tho stage was tastefully decorated witli flags and treeferns, wliicli added a note of warmth and cheerfulness to the proceedings. Vocal and instrumental items wero contributed by Mosdames Thorns, Dunn, and ICember, the Misses , Henry (3), Clark, Meek, Waldio, Miller, Daniolls, Jeffrey, and Chapman, and Master Rodney Pankhurst, to all of whom great credit is due for tho manner iin which, they acquitted themselves. Sweets wero sold during the afternoon by some of tlie younger girls, who looked very neat in their wliito frocks and nurses' uniforms. Three outstanding it-ems in a varied programme were a tableau representing "Britannia," the rendering of ''Tipperary" by one of the older girls dressed in Territorial uniform, and supported by a bodyguard of little children, and by a chorus of . older girls, and a costumed representation of a scene from "Cfanford." At the conclusion of the entertainment, Mr. C. C. Crump, Mayor of Onslow, on behalf of the audience, thanked those who had propared the entertainment, and expressed the h6nc that in a few months time a second performance would bo held. It is expected that the fund will benefit to the extent of about £20. Tliree clieers for tlio wounded soldiers concluded a very happy afternoon's entertainment. Military Hospital Guild. ' Miss Dot Lanauze won the first prize, a gold speciman, valued'at £25, in connection with tlio recent fair at Hastings, hold in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' fund. . The death occurred on Sunday of Miss Floronce Cresswell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Cresswell, of. Mastorton. Tho deceased, wlio was thirty-two years of age, was highly respected in- the district.

Tlie book, which 8 has been compiled under tho personal jj supervision of Her Excellency tho jj Countess of Liverpool, is addressed to tho women of New Zealand "who liavo ! been so nobly responding to the call to lj provide comforts for our troops in the ' iield, and for tho men who have been i wounded in tho service of their King and Country." Her Excellency further j expresses the hope that it will bo a useful friend to all in Now Zealand who \ aro working for such a cause. An ad- \ ditional value is given to the book by tlie fact that not only will most useful information bo obtained from its directions, but thoso who buy it will at tho samo timo be helping tho wounded, as every penny made by the sale oC the book.will go to St. .John Ambulance Baso Hospital. Tlie dirwtione for tho various patterns in tho book have all' been thoroughly tested and proved by the people who supplied them. The first chapter contains Her Excellency's patterns for ,knitting and re-footing socks, and also for mittens. The following chapter contains' receipts taken from a book of Army and Navy patterns, and tho following chapters, as well as giving directions_ for the making of socks, balaclavas,' mittens, and gloves, cardigans, bed socks, cholera belts, scarves, and comforters, give many useful hints in regard to knitting, washing the socks, shrinking tho wool, etc. Without any question tho book should prove most useful to ths many women all over the Dominion who pro spending all available timo at knitting comforts for our soldiers as well as to othors who are seeking directions for knitting children's and women's garments. It will bo obtainable from booksellers and drapers throughout New Zealand, and no doubt the littlo violet covered book with cover design by Miss' Isobol Field will bo a tamillar friend in many households. Leather Waistcoat Fund. Donations received at the Town Hall for leather waistcoats for the soldiers, at the front are as follow: —Mrs. Willis (Wadestown), 10s.; Miss Richardson, 55.; Mrs. Pleasants (Tailmpe), £1; T. H. Powles (Ohau), £1; H. R, Harro (Aurahou North), ,10s.; .Mrs. C. R. Smith, £1; Miss P. Myers, 55.; Mr. .AY Nathan, £12 10s.; M'iss Ellis Wilkinson (Tirohanga-moana), £3; Mr. Alec Morris, £2 25.; Mr. and Mrs.. Nicholls, £3 ; Sirs. M. Myers, 10s. On Saturday evening last a large number of guests mat at the. residence of -Mrs. I'oss, Hukanuia, as a. surprise party to Mr. S. Jolt's, who is leaving the district. Mr. Small, in a eulo'gistic speech, presented to Mr. Jelfs, as a small token of esteem from those present, a very handsome gold amulet. Music and games provided enjoyable entertainment, and after a- dainty supper, which was provided by the visitors, tho inging of "Auld Lang Syne" brought to a close a very enjoyable function.
