CHEAPER FLOUR
AND THE PRICE OF BREAD. ;• The price of flour has receded considerably from the elevated plane on which it has.'Stood for six months' past, and ctin now he purchased at £15 f.0.b., Which means about £15 17s. 6d.'. in Wellington. According to an Auckland telegram, flour can be purchased from the Northern' Roller Milling Company for £15 los.. and'there are indications, favoured by, a bounteous harvest ill Canada , that it will drop a good deal more before the end. of the year.. • . As the public has been charged sd. per 21b. loaf when • flour stood as high as £18 and £18 55., inquiries were made on Saturday as to whether local bakers were not contemplating reducing the price of bread in Wellington. . Mr: H. llaven, president of the Master Bakers' stated that flour had fallen in price, and, ho understood, could.now be bought at £15 f.o.b. in the : South, but it should be remembered that.no flour at that price had yet arrived!, in Wellington, to his knowledge. Consequently, most ,of the bakeries .were stocked with flour at the higher figure. When flour, I .wont ;up the.price of rbread did not advance at onco, and so • when it began to drop : it could hardly be expected that, tho bakers could lower , the price immediately. Mr. Ravon stated 'that there would probably be a. meeting of association .during the ..present week, when it is probable that the matter will be considered.
