. -p ■ ■ .■ TO HOLD MILITARY TOURNEY. The executive of the Patriotio Society met last night in the Chamber of Commerce. The president- (Mr. H. 6. Hill) presided,. and there was an attendance of about fifteen. v ." Captain, M'Laghlan addressed, .the meeting' regarding the holding of a military tournament or assault-at-arms. He had just returned'from- the South Island, lie said, and. three very successful tournaments had been, held there. He explained! at length tho various items which would be given at the proposed tourney, and said that ho proposed himself, to attempt to break liis own record by cutting eight sheep in half with a sword when.riding at tlio full gallop. They, should get an attendance of 30,000 in Wellington at both afternoon and evening sessions,, and as well, as interesting the public it would give an impetus to recruiting. ' ' Mr. H. G. Hill said that the inner executive had favourably considered the_ proposal, and had decided to add military, officers to their committee to assist in carrying it out. BrigadierGeneral Robin had given liis support to the idea, so it was well backed. The date they now suggested'was September 4. . ' Tho inner executive and the military officers named were authorised to " cany, on the matter, and an advertising committee was set up, consisting . of Messrs. W. E. Puller, and R. K. Lyon. Captain M'Laghlan said that he would reqjiire ten. to twenty good' riders to assist him. It was decided that applications' should be invited, to _bo sent in to. tho secretary of the Patriotic Committee. Mr. Hill said that everything was ready for the tourney, and they were only waiting for the definite permission of the City . Council to allow them to use Newtown Park. • The Entertainment Committee reported on the recent' Carnival, and gave special praise to Mrs. Hannah for tho part'she had taken. Mention was also made of the various other persons and societies who had given concerts, and had in various ways assisted. Messrs. Puller and Lyon were thanked by the committee for the wav they had carried out their duties as tile Entertainment Committee, and it was' decided to send a .letter of appreciation to Mrs. Hannah. A vote of thanks was also extended to the "Headmasters' Association and to the secretary-of the Schools Committee. The Entertainment Committee was instructed to make arrangements for a lecture by Mr. J. Clegg, a Dunedin resident, who was a captive for somo time oli a German cruiser.
