NATIONAL RESERVE

The Lyall Bay miifc of the National Reserve held their weekly parade on Thursday evening. There was a good muster and the committee took the opportunity of announcing, the result of the recent ballot for officers, and the result was as follows:—Captain, Mr. Hackworth; First Lieutenant, Mr; Willis ; Second Lieutenant, Sir. Dawson. Captain Hackworth took advantage of Colonel Porter's visit to Hataitai, and marched his company tflioro, where the colonel addressed the men and expressed Ms pleasure at the surprise visit and promised to arrange an evening inspection of the Lyall Bay unit. Major Amos, commanding the B Company, then invited the Lvall Bay men in to inspect their range Which had just been opened by Colonel Porter, and the men then maTched back to the bay and indulged in some very useful practice on the range. This unit is reported to bo showing a marked improvement in drill and the officers hope that the example tfliown will draw more members to the ranks. The unit are to fire their return match with the Miramar unit and the way the men are' practising promises a very interesting contest. A further ahallenge was received from a team irepresemting the Gusto mshousei Miniature Rifle Club for a ton-men ar side match, to take place next Tuesday at the Lyall Bay range. The teams aTe as follows for match against the Miramar unit:— : A Team—Haokworthj Willis, Clark, Townsley. Parkin, Robinson, Kidd, Meier, Tucker, Gellately. B Team— Dixon, Moran, Simpson, Burgess, Dawson, Ward, Williamson, Easson, Dallason, Barraclough, Stone, Christie. The team to shoot'against the Customshouse will be selected from the ten highest scores made against Miramar on Monday evening.
