THE NAVY LEAGUE

A meeting of the Navy League held last night was attended by Mr. J. ii. Harcourt (in tho chair), Messrs. D. ' M'Kellar, R. Darroch, C. R. Smith, Major Poison, and C: W. Palmer. The draft of the annual report submitted by the secretary was approved, and the date of the general meeting of subscribers was fixed for August 24. As in former years, it was resolved to send a frozen wreath of New Zealand foliage to London to place on tho Nelson Memorial, 'Trafalgar Square, 011 October 21. It was dccided to celebrato Trafalgar by a big demonstration at the Town Hall 011 the evening of that date. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs. C. R. Smith and R. Darroch, was appointed to act with the secretary and chairman. • The arrival of a supply of very interesting text-books for the school members was reported. First-year juvenile members are to receive a copy of "Tho Story of the Royal Navy," illustrated in colours, and second-year members are to have "Everybody's "Book of the Navy." ' _• The school prize competition is to be open to all pupils, and the subject as before is to be "What. Naval Disaster Would Mean to the' British Empire." The secretary reported that the new-ly-formedl branches of the league at New Plymouth High Schools had .V membership of over 200 hi tho aggregate. On tho suggestion of. Mr. R. Darroch it was decided to present a machine-gun to the Defence Department, a deposit to be paid now, and the bakneo raised on Trafalgar Day. It was resolved to remit £5 to London on account of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Tobacco Fund. A quantity of correspondence was dealt with. The secretary was authorised to wait upon Mr. A. F. Roberts, Mr.-G. G. Townsend, Mr. Bullock, and Mr. ■ Wiren, with a view" to those gentlemen being added to.the committee.
