" ' Dunedln, August 12. , The charge against John Robert Henderson of stealing £5, money received for ammunition, concluded in the Supreme Court to-day. _ The' jury returned a verdict of guilty,, and added a rider expressing surprise at the las manner in which" the Defence Department controlled the supply of ammunition, as it seemed the common practice for officers of companies to soli ammunition without proper authority. Accused was next charged with, at Milton, stealing £2 10s., an amount received by him for ammunition. Tho jury returned a verdict of guilty, and supplemented the verdict, with tho following rider: Tho jury recommend tho prisoner to the mercy of the Court, and deprecate the lax manner' in which tho books and. moneys of tho regiment had been managed. Tho nextcharge. was one of stealing £2 Bs., portion of a sum paid him for payment as camp pay, Tho jury, returned a verdict 6f guilty. Henderson was also found guilty on a'charge pf stealing £1 10s., amount received for 5 a military belt, and not guilty on a charge of. stealing £7 Bs. Gd. J. 11. Henderson was convicted of charges, of stealing sums of £5 paid, to him for'ammunition, £2 Bs., a portion of £15 10s. paid to him' for payment of rear party at camp, £1 10s., received for a military belt, and £95 55., portion of f ioiiey paid to hiih for the payment of officers and men of tho South Otago Regiment during camp at Milton. The accused was acquitted on the charge of stealing £7 Bs. 6d., portion of a cheque paid bylim as adjutant to Georgo'Reid, bai'niau, in the first case. The jury recommended prisoner to mercy, and "deprecate the manner in which the boolts and moneys of tho regiment had been . managed; not only by Henderson, but 'by.his predecessors." Sentence'was deferred; John Bell M'Clymont was . charged with, theft of £50, the amount of a cheque drawn by him as officer commanding' the 14th South. Otago Regiment. ■
