REGULATIONS FOR GOVERNMENT GRANTS. This week's Gazette contains the new regulations governing the payment of the Government capitation grants in aid of school libraries. Out of funds appropriated by Parliament for the purposes of school and class libraries in public schools there will he paid to each: Education Board an annual capitation grant of 3d. for each child in average attendance in tho district during the year preceding that for wlijcli the grant is made. The grant shall be utilised for the purpose of providing supplementary continuous readers sufficient in number for class reading b.v pupils in classes P to S6 inclusive, and also for tho purpose of supplying free class-books in necessitous eases and in cases where newly entered, pupils have already purchased elsewhere class-books different from those in use in tho school. Supplementary readers and other' class-hooks so provided shall be such only as aro approved or sanctioned in accordance with the Act. Requests for the approval of class-hooks other than those already on tho approved list should he accompanied by copies of the hooks. After provision has been made for the supply of the books- above-mention-ed, the balaneo of the grant, if any, shall be spent on hooks approved by the senior inspector Ifor the district as suitable for individual reading by the pupils in school or at home.
