HEAVY FIGHTING IN THE ARGONNE
TERRIFIC BOMBARDMENT . FRENCH LINE SLIGHTLY PENETRATED Tha Higli Commissioner reports:— London, August 12, 1.30 a.m. "In tli6 Argonne the bombardment redoubled in intensity, extensive use being made o[ asphyxiating bombs. This was followed up b.v a very violent German, attack on the Binarville-Vicnne lo Chateau Eoad. The enemy penetrated our position slightly,- but were driven out of all save a. portion of tlio first trench. To tile eastward, another attack was completely repulsed. FRENCH OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE. By Telegraph—Tress Association—Copyright Paris, August 11. A communique states: "A German attempt to attack Soucliesi with petard"l was repulsed. . Our positions in tlio Arcane were violently bombarded.
(Rcc. August 12, 9.30 p.m.) • Paris, August 12. Official.—"Tlio bombardment on the Argonne front redoubled in intensity, accompanied by Ilia use of a large number of asphyxiating shells. A violent German attack followed at dawn. At least three German regiments advanced on our position on the Biiuirvillc-Viemie-le-Chateau Road, and tlio Houyetta ravine, and tho Germans' centre on this sector penetrated our position, 'i'hev were driven out, on the counter-attack, retaining part of the lirst line of trenches. We took prisoner a number of Wurtembur[;ers. Further cast, towards Foll la i u e-au x-Cli armcs, the enemy launched attacks which wcro completely repulsed." CIVILIANS KILLED AT PRAGA. (Rec. August 12, 9.30 p.m.) Borne, August 12. During the Russo-German street fighting at Praga, fifteen civilians were accidentally killed and two hundred wounded.
