SEVERE FIGHTING CONTINUES ■ ON GAIAIPOLI SUBSTANTIAL GAINS RUSSIAN FORTRESS THREATENED ' FIERCE COUNTERATTACKS ' GERMAN 'BATTALIONS ALMOST: / ANNIHILATED ANOTHER BLOW. IN THE AEGONNE Severe fighting still continues ia Gallipoli, and tlie Allies' gains have been consolidated. Near by. in the other Balkan States, the diplomats are waging a war of a subtler kind, and the progress of events seems to indicate that the Quadruple Entente is' slowly gathering a preponderating influence in tho Balkans. Events in- t-lio Russian theatre indicate a Russian recovery 011 the Bug front southward of Warsaw, but tho German pressure on the northern flank is still very severe. The big fortress df lvovno, on tho Niemen,'lias been fiercely assailed by the Germans, and one report indicates an early abandonBiokt. Russian countor-attaeks in this region have almost annihilated tlireo German battalions. The Germans are pressing their naval attack 'on the Riga coast, and further actions, are reported to-day. There is practically no news, at tho time of writing, as to-tlio present position in the Austro-Italian theatre. On the Western front thero lias.been another terrific attack on the French line by the Crown Prince's troops, and our Allies' line ,vas slightly penetrated, but coun- ■ ter-attacks recovered practically all the lost ground. ■
