LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL
. There were present at_ the fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council, on Monday evening: The Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin), and Councillors Hodgills, Meldrum, Carver, Brassel, Clendon, M'Dougall, Ball ; and Hobbs. The borough solicitors advised that the proclamation taking land at Donnelly's Corner had been duly registered; aud tlio land was now vested in tins council. The postal authorities advised tliat a stamp-vending machine would shortly bo installed on a three months' trial, and if the result is satisfactory tlio machino would be permanently placed there; .
Some discussion took place in respeot to an application from the. council's labouring staff for an increase in wages of Id. per hour. Councillor Brassel thought the mssii should taice up other work if they wished to earn £3 per week. Councillor Carver expressed the opinion that although the men may be entitled to the extra amount, the council was not entitled to give it. , Councillor * Ball favoured the increase, stating the council, when employing men, 6hould be model employers. He moved that tlio Works and Finance Committee consider the matter, with a view to seeing what could be done. The motion was seconded by Councillor M'Dougall, and carried.
The engineer's report showed that the expenditure for tne fortnight ending July 31 had been: District' Fund account, £204 12s. Bd.; gas account, £14 7s. 7d.: total,'£2l9 Os. 3d.
