LEAGUE FOOTBALL
'' — HAWKE'S BAY'' DISSATISFIED. tßy Teleffrapli—Presp Association-* • Auckland, August 10. i 'At a meeting of tlio Council of the ■New Zealand Football League* a letter was received from tlie .ilawke's Bay League protesting against-the treatment meted out to it by thei Auckland League regarding representative matches. It had asked for a date for a match with Auckland, and had received ■ a reply that Auckland would'not play representative matches on account of the war. The Hawke's .Bay League expressed disapproval of the methods of the Council, in what'it called "side-stepping" its responsibilities by sheltering behind sentiment. It was manifestly unfair to imp° ss any restrictions as to w!hat visiting teams should do with the gate money.' The chairman remarked that when the Australian tour was suggested early in the season, the Council was severely criticised, and the tour was abandoned. Tho Council had since been of opinion that the proceeds of representative matches should be devoted to patriotic purposes. They could not, ho thought, do too much for the wounded soldiers. It was resolved that the Auckland League be written to asking for a copy of the Hawks'b Bay League's challenge. The Council decided that it could not see its way to-make a; grant to thai Wellington League for acquiring a gym- j nasium.
