RAFFLES & PROSECUTIONS

"GOING TOO FAR." A statement in regard to tliS raffles that are being conducted for patriotic purposes was made by tho Prime Minister yesterday evening. "The Government," Mr. Massoy said, "have decided in regard to art unions that are now in progress for genuinely patriotic purposes tliat the police will not take action without, the direction of tho Attor-ney-General, but after this date the provisions of tho Gaming and Lotteries Act will be very strictly enforced. No permits to conduct art unions have been granted except those that are strictly in accordance with tho Act. A number of people who have been enthusiatic in regard to certain patriotic proposals have, unwittingly perhaps, strained the law. The thing is going much too far, and it has to be clieckod. That is the position at present."
