A NEW FISH MARKET
Now are the days when the monster hapuka and his cousin the bass are bitingfreely in the' Strait, and it is a poor day's fishing when the launches from Kona and Islands Bays do not return fijom the Strait well laden. There must have been between six and seven tons of hapuka sold at the new wholesale fish market of Messrs. Townsend and-Paul, in Allen Street, yesterday. For somo years past this .firm has been the intermediary between the man in the launch and the itinerant fish-hawker,' and with the growth of that branch of the business Jlessrs. Townsend and Paul have had to extend their premises.' Quite recently they' secured the whole of the adjoining brick premises formerly occupied by the New Zealand Fruit and Produce Company, for a fish market.
With the hapuka season in full swing, the ,new fish market is a scene of somo activity at about 9 o'clock in the morning, as the sale is attended not only by hawkers, but by hotel asd boarding-house-keepers, restauranteurs,_and keepers of the many, "fish and. chip" shops, anxious to secure sufficient for the day. Hapukas were sold yesterday morning from 2s. 6d. to 4s. 6d. each, according to the size, . whilst some big.bass brought as, high as 7s. each. The fish are in splendid condition, and some weigh as' much as 401b. They are brought in headless from the launches, but are cleaned at the markets.
