THE TURF

GRAND NATIONAL MEETING BANKSIA'S WINTER CUP BIG STEEPLECHASE WON BY NGATOA. (Br Telegraph.—Spcclal Correspondent.) Christchurch, August 10. A large gathering assembled at.Eiccarton for tho opening of the Grand National meeting. Tne weather was splendid. Hjs iixceilency Lord Liverpool was among the visitors, most of tho Dominion's leadiwj sporting men also being present. Tho going was a triflo hard, but was conducive to good times. Tho totalisator handled •1M5,386, as against ,£38,517 10s. for the corresponding day last year. Parewanui was the only horso that in-< forested backers in the Hunters' Hurdles, for which the whole of the acceptors went to the post. Tho favourite was in command after jumping the first fence, and' was not. troubled on the way. DearAnnie, a Tiina.ru. candidate, was second, and Merrio Valet, Traditor, Flight, and Curilla followed in that order. Dan Cameron, 'l'aft, and Dardanelles fell at the back of the course, and Platinum and Turco at tho last fence. Taft was killed. and his rider sustained a broken collar-bone. Dan Cameron's rider also broko his collar-bone.

Multiply, despito the fact that he was sore, was a better fa'voUrito than Scrutineer in tho Trial Hurdles. The pair, ran badly, and tho winner turned up in Moddite, who fenced well for a beginner, and had too much pace for tho others, of whom Ruatangata mado the best showing. On his form to-day Multiply cam have littlo chanco in the National Hurdles, In the Jumpers' Flat Race, the publio went for Harbour Light, Admiral Soult, and Sain Pan in that order. Tho formerjumped out cleanly, and was in front on the fence the- whole way. _ Over the greater part of tho distance Vi and Kilmcny were with him, but the condition-' of the latter failed him at the distance, and Harbour Light ran in a comfortable winner from Sam Pan and Vi. Closely, following came Kihneny, Lord Frederick, and Styrax, while Admiral Soult broke' down and was pulled up. ■ There was a big crowd round the birdcage to inspect the runners for ,the bis Steeplechase. All eye 3 were fixed on Tim Doolan, who stripped the fittest, and. looked fit to take his place in a cup field. He was all muscle, and in this respect towered above the others. Morning stripped better than the earlier reports indicated would be tho case. Ngatiranui, Glenmore, and Ngatoa wero all showing sips of having done a good preparation. _Tim Doolan was made a very hot order. When the field settled' down Morning was showing the way to Glenmore, and the pair, gave a splendid exhibition of jumping. Golden Grape was the first to come down, at the mile-post, and Daylight-Bill rolled; over at the next fence, while Sandy Paul ran ofE at the kennels double, where Fagot fell. Passing the stand the second' time the leaders were unchanged, but Tim Doolan had run into third place. Down the back Morning asserted himself, and his victory was being pronounced, but the second fence of the double brought him down. Glenmore was joined by J-ini Doolan. Approaching the second fence from home Ngatoa was seen to be comingfast, and the trio rose together. Thia was the end of the favourite, as he bumped M'Flinn out of the saddle. Ngatoa was in command at the last fence, where Glenmore punched J. 0 Connell off, and the Auckland hack ran in the easiest ot winners from The Brewer, who was a, rank outsider, and Golden, Glow. Uptain M'Kay and Cardift were the only, others to finish. Outside of Mormns nothiupr would have won but the iwnnou who certainly had Tim Boolau s -measure when the latter got rid of his nder. ltufus was a solid fancy for the Tally Ho Plate, and he won very comfortably in tho hands -of his owner. Forard and Yokel ran off at the first fence, but the first-named was brought back and completed the course.. . Glenroy was always favourite, in tne Winter Cup. He began smartly, and .was; in front with Potentiality till the straight was reached, when ho commenced tiro, and Banksia, coming from behind,, ran to : the front, and won by a couple of lengths. fToni Encore, with John Barleycorn a head away. . Then came Glenroy, Plunder, Jeanr.ot, Loloma, Slogan, and Fabrikoff, with Lady Louisa last, : ■ George' broks down badly. . - The Mouse monopolised the attentions of backers for the Enfield Steenles; but he, in company with most of the other runners, failed to negotiate the course 6afely. At the stand double Rustic tell, and Agatha. Green and. Toby fell over him. Kingsly tell at the back, and so did Bandflfiero and The Mouse. Grey Renown was always in charge, and fencing • well, he won nicely from Bonny, with Northern beaten off. The concluding event saw Nicomar a strong machine favourite, but the Aucklander was never dangerous. The winner turned up in Derby Day, who was early in charge, and won by two cleat lengths. Micky Free, Tcki, and Bore were the next to finish.
