KEEP UP REINFORCEMENTS
GENERAL GODLEY'S FEARS
Tli'e Defence Minister' has not yet received any : notification from tlio Imperial authorities of .the acceptance of the two new,-infantry battalions recently offered by New Zealand. Concerning offers of; new units it is interesting to know with what mixed feelings General Godley regarded the raising of the Trentham Regiment. In a letter to the Defence Minister llllder date June 24, General Godlej wrote: "I do very much liopo that the large reinforcement's necessary to keep up our New Zealand Infantry Brigade will not suffer by the raising of these two new battalions. It would he a terribly pity if tho material for the First Brigade deteriorated at all. as they have'made such a name for themselves, and are acknowledged on all sides to be so excellent." Mr.. Allen said, referring to this letter, that the same point was stressed in nearly every letter he received—the necessity for keeping up reinforcements. "I have_ telegraphed to General Godley," said Mr. Allen, "to relieve 3iis Jr.ind, and to assure him that, if we send, new battalions were - shall also keep up reinforcements not only on the main body, but'on the new battalions. I hope people will take this to heart— how important it is to look ahead, for i year, or even two years, and to make i&rtain that we can keep up these twomonthly reinforcements."
