Tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) called on the ' Minister of Defenco (Hon. Jas. Allen) yesterday to ascertain, if possible, the condition of the sick and wounded who aro returning to New Zealand by' the Tahiti, which left Suez on Saturday last. He stated that ho wished to : gain all the available information in order that the_ arrangements for welcoming and assisting them may not bo left until the last moment. The Minister had not received sufficient information so far to base any accurate conclusions upon, but -lie gathered from Mr:- Allen that the men returning were more seriously injured on the average than those returned by the Willochra.
