For War Orphans, Some very, effective work for war orphans has- been done steadily and unostentatiously by the Guild that has been working in connection with the Order of the Star of the East for the past few months, and at the end of August members hope to send a box away to England to relieve in some degree the .distress which is unhappily so prevalent. The commiteo would be glad if all work: is brought to tlio Stor of the East room in Woodward Street, on Saturday, August 14, between two and four o'clock, and offers of assistance in packing and folding will bo gladly welcomed. It is tlie intention of the .Guild to send to England at regular intervals similar boxes for the children who have suffered losses through tlio war.

The first meeting of the New Ladies' Auxiliary of the . Boys' Institute was held 011 Monday evening in the present. Institute Buildings. Mrs.• Moorhouse, in the absence of Mrs. Hislop, was in the chair. Miss Dock was olected to tlie committee in place of Mrs. Pearson. Various business matters wero discussed Sewing in connection with the new tepid baths to be opened was distributed during tho evening. It is expected that the new quarters of the Boys' Institute will be ready towards the end of September.

A handsome green silk cushion, embroidered with" a design in ribbonwork of a basket of richly coloured flowers, is' on view in the windows of the Bristol Piano Company. It is the work of Mrs. Isaacs, of The Terrace, and is to be raffled for tho beuefit of tlio Wounded Soldiers' Fund, 'towards the iniddio of September. Tho tickets are to' be. obtained for -the very moderate sum of sixpence, and considering .the cause arid tho work itself there should be no lack of purchasers.

The Australian nurses who arrived in Auckland on Saturday from Rotorua were taken to see a performance of "Hinemoa" by the Maori Opera Company! on Saturday evening, and on Monday morning they visited the Hospital and saw their former patients. In the afternoon a reception was given for them in' the Town Hall by the Mayoress and in the evening {hey left for Sydney. '

. Our ' Carterton correspondent writes that the funeral of tho late Mrs. A. H. Krahagen, of Carterton, took place on Sunday afternoon, and was largely attended by friends and relatives. The Rev. J. Ward conducted tho service. The pall bearers were: Bros. A. C. Holms (President of tho Past Grand Lodgo of Oddfellows),' M. , 13. Tait (Featlierston), J. A. Boake (Martinborougli), P. Smith (Masterton), J. Fensham, and' Thomas Reid (Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge), Carterton. In •the cortege were about GO Oddfellows from Masterton, Carterton, Greytown; Featherston, 'aiid Martinborougli, Mr. ICrahagen being a member of tho Greytown Lodge. Very many floi'al tributes ■wore forwarded to be placed on the casket. ■ '
