MUNICIPAL GOLF LINKS
READY IN A MONTH'S TIME,
Gladdening news to tho golfer is tho Mayor's announcement that the new municipal golf links at Berhamporo will be ready for play in-about a month's time. Accompanied by the members of tho Reserves Committee, Mr. W. H. Morton (City Engineer), and Mr. .T. Patejson _ (Assistant Engineer), the Mayor paid a visit to the new links, and though he does not pretend to know anything about golf, ho was delighted with all he saw. In tho first instance Mr. Luke controverts a statement to the effect that the links are near the supplomentarj- hospital at Berhamporo. "That idea is altogether erroneous, and should be removed," said Mr. Luke. "You enter tho : northern' end of the links from Brittomart Street, and from that point the lay of the links is southward—;nn open, sunny hillside, with a splendid outlook, . easy to negotiate, and not at all rough going. I was agreeably surprised with the place, as I had formed the impression that that the location was moro rugged, but found, it to be one of tho most lovely and inviting portions of tho Town Belt, and I am told the links—a nine-hole course —will be found to be one of tho most attractive to golfers in and about Wellington. I was told it would bo ready for play in about a month's time., Tho grass is already well grown on the greens, which aro at present protected by temporary fences." Asked ais to tho system of control, 'Mr.'Luke stated that the matter was at present under the consideration of the Reserves Committee, which would shortly furnish a report as to what they think the charge for play should be, and wQiat measures are necessary to control the links and keep theni in order.
Mr. Morton, who is a golfer, states that the plan for the lay-out of tho links was prepared by Messrs. Watts and Simpson, professional golfers. As one who played the game, he would desoribe the links as fairly difficult, but all the more interesting on that account. In their configuration they resembled the Johnsonville links more than any other in the vicinity of Wellington ,and as Johnsonville was crowded every Saturday, he was pretty sure that links on a threepenny section from the centre of the city would prove a great attraction. *
