MAGISTRATE'S COURT
CRUELTY TO HORSES
DRIVER AND OWNER FINED
Cruelly ill-treating coach horses was tho charge alleged against Mrs. 1 ? . D. Sammons and 11 Stewart, in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday. Jlr. J. S. Barton appeared for informants (tho S.P.C.A.), and Mr. P. W. Jackson for defendants. Tho evidence showed that defendant Sammons was tho owner of tho horses in question, Tho Biiimals were driven in a coach at Kona Bay, It. Stewart being tho driver of tho coach. Inspector Henry, the society's inspector, said that. ho had previously warned defendant Stewart alxmt working tho horses, and at a later date July 22, ho discovered Stewart driving tho sanio horses in ,the coach.. The animals wero in a half-starved .and altogether shocking condition. Tho Magistrate (Jlr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M.) fined each accused .£2, with costs 20s.
SERIOUS CHARGES. Threo serious charges woro preferred against Andrew Julius Finlay, who bad been arrested ill Sydney. Accused was remanded to August 13, bail being allowed on M.r, P. W. Jackson's application, in .£IOO.
OTHER CASES. . Thos. Elliott, who was found guilty of Using obscene language on board the Mocrnki, while that vessel was on its way from Sydney to Wellington, was fined with costs 'is., in default fourteen days' imprisonment. A sentence of three months' imprisonment was imposed on .Mary Irene Williams, who was proved to be idle and disorderly. Accused was fined 205., with costs 75., in default three days' imprisonment, for breaking her prohibition order. John M'Doiuihl was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and fined '10s., in default seven days' imprisonment, oil a charge of using obscene language. William M'Kay was lined 53., in default ii hours' imprisonment, for drunkenness, and remanded to August 12 on a ehnrgo of assaulting Constable Jarrold. Bail was allowed in .£2O. For drunkenness, Win. Almond was fined 10s., in default seven days' imprisonment; Evelyn Butler, lined XI oiMhreo days' imprisonment; and David Fulton and Patrick Egan, each fined 10s., or 10 hours' detention. Eight first-offending inebriates were dealt with. Charged with breaking their prohibition orders, Minnie Brown, John Robinson, and John Williamson were each with costs 76., in default three days' imprisonment.
MAINTENANCE CASKS. Thomas Chalmers Leslie M'Gregor was charged with disobeying three maintenance orders,, llic total arrears of which were .Cliili 1!R Defendant was dealt with only in respect to one charge, and on this ho was sentenced to twenty days' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended on the payment of Ids. per week. Emily C'allaghan proceeded against her husband Hairy C'allaghan for separation maintenance, and guardianship orders. Her applications were granted, and defendant ordered to pay 255. per week towards her maintenance. Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon appeared for complainant.
