S.S. CORINNA IN DIFFICULTIES

STRIKES A REEF

. As tho Union Company's steamier Corinna, which left Wellington at 11.10 p.m. yesterday, for New Plymouth, was proceeding through the Heads she stuck hard and fast for some time in the vicinity, of Barrett's Hcof. Captain Dawson, Harbourmaster, proceeded to tho scene of tho accident, and after several • attempts tho vessel was successfully refloated. At an eariy hour this morning the Corinna was observed making her way up the harbour, under her own steam, towards Evans Bay. As far as could bp ascertained the vessel had not suffered serious damage. At 2 a.m. the Corinna arrived at the Union Company's , Wharf, Evans Bay, where she was tied up for the night. On inquiry it was ascertained that tho vessel was leaking in the forward part, but the opinion was hold that her pumps were quite able to copo with' the inrush of water. The salvage tug Terawliiti was mado ready, but it was thought that her services would not bo required till this morning. Latest information from.tlio Patent Slip was to the cffect that the Corinna was' quite safe, and it is probable that she will be taken up on the cradle for examination today. The Corinna is a vessel of 1271 tons, built in 1882 by D. and W. Henderson, of Glasgow, arid owned ' by ,the Union . Company. She is a wellknown trader -round the New Zealand coast, having at one time been a favourite passenger steamer: For tho past few years she has been engaged in the southern ports-Wellington-New Plymouth cargo trade. It was in 1848. that the first wreck occurred on Barrett's Reef., On that occasion tho ship Sobraon, leaving Wellington with passengers, struck and became a total ■ wreck. Other mishaps have been as follow:— Ladybird, steamer, struck the. reef October 21, 1871. ■■''"» - Earl of. Southesk, barque, became a total loss May 28, 1874.
