Br Ttileerajh—Press Association—Copyright " (Rec. August 4, 9.40 p.m.) , „ , . , ~ .... Rome, August 4. The climax of the fighting on the Carso heights occurred when the Emperor's Jaeger Regiment was brought up to the trenches for a.last effort. The Emperor a few days before had reviewed them at Vienna, renewing • the traditional oath: "I swear to be inflexible as iron." The Jaeger, who are mostly Tyrolese, were convinced that they would be so irresistible that they shouted: "Surrenderl" in Italian. The Bergsaglieri shouted back: "Will eat your hearts first 1" The next moment four thousand Bergsaglieri, with bayonets, leaped into tho Jaeger trenches, shouting "Savoia!" A desperate hand-to-kand struggle took place, even teeth being used in the trenches, which were soon piled with' dead. Few escaped. 'AUSTRIAN OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE (Rec. August 4, 9.40 p.m.) Amsterdam, August 4. An Austrian communique states;— "'We repulsed many attempts to'storm our lines east of Polazzo, and on Monoscibush. The Italians' lost heavily."
