"THE BURGLAR AND THE LADY"

THE ALLEN DOONE COMPANY.

kets. Events which follow confirm which was staged at the Grand Opera House last evening, Mi'. Allen Doone is seen in a role entirely different from his customary part as an Irish singing comedian. As the daring scientific burglar with a nerve of iron, Mr. Do'ono displays his great versatility, and even here his wonderful charm of voice and manner asserts itself in a- remarkable degree. "The Burglar and the Lady" is a very gripping dctectivo play founded on the idea of Sherlock Holmes outwitted and baffled. Sherlock Holmes is engaged in tho tracking down of the perpetrator of a series of robberies performed on modern scientific lines, and he swears to have the thief in his possession in a very little while. The mysterious thief is known to the police as Raffles. He calls-himself Ned .Danvers, dctective.- While Holmes is at a ball watching' for him, Danvers enters a banker's house and steals valuable jewejlery. He is interrupted in the opera, tion by the banker's niece, and says ho is Detective Danvers in search of a burglar. Holmes enters, and accuses Danvers of the theft, but • Danvers points to a cupboard in which Holmes's servant is lying (stunned by Danver's accomplice) with valuables m his pocIcots. Events which follow confirm Holmes in his suspicions of Danvers, and Danvers, 6eeing this coolly wagers him a purse of dollars that ,a big robbery. will be committed in the town within. tho week, and that the thief ivill slip through his fingers. Holmes accepts the wager. Danvers cleverly plans a night robbery of tho bank. Ho has completed the removal of the gold and dispatched it to safety (from his point of view) when Holmes, to whom he has 'phoned the fact that the bank has been broken, into, arrives. Holmes imagines ho holds tho whip hand, and proceeds to examine the strongroom, whereupon Danvers pushes him insido and locks the door. Donning Holmes's overcoat and cap, ho escapes. Some days later, Danvers, still hunted by the police, bursts into tho boudoir of Norma .Gray, with whom ho has fallen in love, and begs to bo shown a way of escape. The police send the rector to search the room. Ho discovers Danvers there, and determines tc denounco him. Danvers unfolds his tale. The rector and he are brothers, bnt while tho rector has drifted east and prospered, Danvers had stayed west and struggled to keep his mother —their mother. His mother becamo ill, and, being without money, ho stole, and that led to his career as a burglar. Norma prevails upon the rector to allow Danvers to escape, and eventually Norma and Danvers, the latter now a restorer of stolen property and a man resolved on a new life, quit America —and Holmes is finally euchred. In tho chief Mr. Doone is excellent; Miss Edna Keeley is a very sweet Norma Gray; -Mr. Onslow Edgeworth gives a worthy representation of Sherlock Holmes; ana the remainder of the company do good work. The picce will he repeated tonight and to-morrow night.
