Wells, the novelist, in which it was pointed ou,t that Great Britain should- bring imaginative enterprse and the utmost resources of /scientific knowledge to bear in winning the war. The heads of ■ Rolls-Royeo make the following inter- , esting suggestions in the course of tlieir ' „ letter: —"We suggest that tho Govern-,.'., ment should offer, three money prizes -".C of sufficient magnitude to secure that the. best brains of the civilised world should be concentrated on the best solution for us of three problems, viz. 1. How to catch, render ineffective, or destroy submarines. 2. How-to de-.-stray, by some new method or valuable"'' ' improvement on older methods, Ger-; ; r ' mail, Austrian, and Turkish combatantsin tho greatest possible number in the shortest possible time. 3. How to protect ships from torpedoes. Tho offer of three prizes of £100,000 each/would vj, stimulate inventors of all classes in all countries.
