ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

FATAL TRAM ACCIDENT. An inquest was held at tlio Wellington Hospital by Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., lato yesterday aftornoon into tho baiise of death of John Singleton, 67 years of age, who died at' tlio Hospital on Sunday morning from injuries received through being knocked down by a tramear in Courtenay Place on Saturday evening. .Dr. Marshall, ■ house-surgeon at the ■Wellington Hospital, said that Singleton was unconscious when admitted to the institution on Saturday ovening. He never recovered consciousness, and died at about 2 a.m. • on August 1. Death was duo.to coma from compression of the, brain, owing to a fracture at the base of tli& skull.

The evidence of the motorman (John 6. E. Clark), of Car 103, was that he' had travelled 150 yards from Courtcnay Place stop on the evening in question when a man appeared on the set of rails on the right of his car, and was about to come oil. Ho (the motorman) sounded the gong,, and cut off power. Singleton put has head down, and .darted across. Witness put on the emergency brakes. Tho man lurched towards the car, however, and striking it. fell back on tho streot. This evidence was corroborated by other witnesses. .Arthur Charles Evans, a labourer, identified the body of decoascd. The Coroner returned a verdict that deceased met his death through injuries received by being accidentally struck by Car 103. The Coroner added that jio blamo was attachable _to anyone, and that the motorman did all in his power to avoid an accident. DEATH UNDER CHLOROFORM. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Ashburton, August 3. Margaret Georgina Low, a single woman, aged 26 years, was found with her throat cut in a cliafFhouse at her brother's farm at Barrhill late yesterday afternoon.
