THE PRUSSIAN SPIRIT
A' lecture was given by the Hon. Geo. Fowlds at tho Y.M.C.A. Assembly Hall lasb night on "The Prussian ripirit." Between twenty and thirty, people wero present. In his opening remarks, Mr. Fowlds 9pposed tho idea that the Prussian spirit and the 6pirit of militarism were one and the same thing, even though they might run hand ill hand. He distinguished also between the martial spirit and the military spirit, the former being defensive while the latter w;as defiant. Defining the Prussian spirit, he explained that it was based on egoism' and a desire to dominate the lives of others. It rested on tho assumption that Prussian "kultur" _ was superior to every other form of civilisation, and on the determination not to prove the merit of that "kultur," but to force all other nations to admit its superiority—to force them, if necessary, by the German sword and frightfulness. The lecturer went on to trace tho origin of this spirit in the German people, its career, and tlie probable fate awaiting it.
