"Just before dawn, a heavy bombardment was open on our trenches from guns of all calibre,' and an unusually large mine-thrower. "Then German engineers turned on . tho taps of their cylinders, and launched a sheet of flame against our parapet. ,An infantry attack followed under cover of this screen flame, and'tlio enemy forced an entry into our trenches.
"This broach was subsequently extended for a distance of five hundred yards b,v bombing. It was a. surprise attack—a grim struggle in semi-dark-ness, aided by dastardly methods, which compelled our men to give ground. "Wo took up a firm position south of Hooge, which was held firmly against all subsequent attacks. "Our reserves counter-attacked on Saturday afternoon, and regained part of the lost trenchcs."
