PRISONERS SENTENCED

'Four prisoners appeared for sentence in tho Supreme Court on. Saturday morning before His Honour the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout). Hector M'Lean appeared on remand jn connection with a charge of breaking and entering and. theft at Wellington. Ho had pleaded guilty, and sentence had been deferred uutil inquiries could be made as to his criminal record in Victoria, and in the meantime ho was serving a sentence of throe years' imprisonment for a crime committed in Christchurch.' Ho was sentenced to a similar term to be concurrent with the 0110 he was already serving. . William Henry Mitchell, ' who had pleaded guilty to a charge of thoft from a dwelling, was declared an habitual criminal, and will in future be under the control of the Prisons Board. Ho had been convicted on numerous previous oe-casions.

A young Maori, named Joseph Rawiri, who had pleaded guilty to charges of breaking and entering and theft, had already served a term under the reformative 'treatment system, and since then had several times been convicted of theft, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment with hard labour, and declared an habitual criminal. May Wills, who was some time ago convicted of robbing a Chinaman at Petone, camo up for sentence on a charge of having cscaped from the Salvation Army Home,. where she ■ had been ordered to remain for a term. She was remanded to prison for a fortnight, in order that the authorities might endeavour to find occupation for her in the country.
