POSITION CRITICAL BUT NOT HOPELESS RUSSIAN RETIREMENT DELIBERATE AND ACCORDING TO PROGRAMME AUSTRIAN CAVALRY IN LUBLIN GERMANS ATTACK THE BRITISH LINE ENEMY USES FLAME PROJECTORS
' Though a definite anrouncem'ent of the evacuation of Warsaw has yet to arrive, tho hulk of the war news to-day relates to a general Russian retreat from the Vistula'and'from tlie lines they have held for some time past in Southern Poland. Reports in hand do not hide the fact that tho Russian armies are being extricated from a. position of very great peril, but a late official message indicates, that on tho southern section of the liuo the retirement has 1 been carried out successfully. Several messages emphasise tlio fact that tho Germans aro striving to reach the mam Russian railways and' cut off the retreating armies from Pet.-ograd and Moscow. On the other hand,, it is pointed out that the Russians are executing a planned retreat according to programme. Many tributes are paid to tho splendid valour iritli which the Russians have resisted tho German onset under the disabilities imposed by a shortage of artillery and munitions. Predictions are made of an early, offensive in the Western theatre,,as soon as a definite point has been reached on tho opposite front, but no very important events are recorded as yet in France and Flanders. Reports from the Dardanelles relate mainly to battles fouglit some weeks ago. The Prime Minister of Bulgaria is quoted by the' "Petit Parisien" aS saying that Bulgaria will assist tho Allies if given a section of Macedonia which she claims from Servia.
