MINCING MACHINE WAR.

: "IT WILL TAKE EVERY MAN , AVAILABLE!"Writing to a friend in Wellington, Mr. H. G. Berryman states that his sons. William and Stanley were. at.tho front. William Berryman is a lieutenaut in the Ist Royal Dragoons. As far as we know rims the letter, "he is now fighting in Flanders,'and Stanley was wounded at the Dardanelles (he is far as wok now, runs the letter, "he is a sergeant in the 10th New Zealand Regiment). We had two letters from William about ten days ago, written on May. 12 and 27. He says' they were having an.-awful time—that!in the last battle on the Ypres his regiment lost vory heavily, six officers killed, and six wounded, also their General and 200 men lost. Ho says it will take every man aavilablo to heat the Germans— that the Allies are barely able to hold their ground in the West. The' fighting lie describes as 'ghastly awful'— whole battalions, and at time whole divisions,- get wiped out in a day, and not a word about.'it is' seen in the papers. Willie has been in the trenches seven months. Judging by. tho tone of his last letters, this long' and desperate struggle means a. terriblo strain on the nerves and health of our men, who have been so long in this mincing-machine war, as he calls it. As you may have seen from tho casualty lists, Stanley has been discharged convalescent from tho hospital at Alexandria. ' We have never been advised' of the nature of his wounds, and are hoping that his injuries may prove of a temporary nature."

An ideal Hawke's Bay farming proposition is advortiscd in Mr. J. A. Miller's space in this morning's issue. Readers aro particularly requested to poruso tho details and write ut once if interested. Tho art union for the copper fender and other articles donated by the Wellington Gas Co., to the St. John Ambulanco Association, will be drawn by the Patriotic Socicty Art Union Committeo at tho Town Hall on Tuesday evoning next.
