French Club. The French: Club held its usual weekly meeting on Thursday evening, Mr. Hudson presiding. The proceedings began with a piano solo by Mies G. Smythson; then followed a lecture by Mdlle. Helene de Cleene oil "Cyrano de Bergerac," a comedy mitten at tlio end of tho last century, but depicting Paris 230 years before. Mdlle. de Cleene illustrated her subject by giving readings of scenes in the play. Sho was assisted in this by Madame' do Cleene, . and Messrs. King and Adamson. A point of interest for tho present time was the siege of Arras, the town where bo much fighting has been going on of late. Tho whole performance was listened to with great interest. ■ It was discussed afterwards by Mrs. Savillo, Miss Mead, and Messrs. liigg and Hudson. Madame Raynal-Matejka contributed a recitation near tho close of tho evening.

Mrs. Hodder, of tie Salvation 'Army, is to give an address to girls and young women at the Youiij* Women's Christian Association, Fowlds's Buildings, Manners- Street, on Sunday. Mrs. Hodder is well known, and a large nnmber should avail themselves of this opportunity of listening to her. The "Regeneration of Russia" is tho title of the lecture to be given by Mrs. A. R. Atkinson to-night at 8 o'clock, at the Young Women's Christian Association, Fowlds's Buildings, Manners Street. The lecture is open to. the public, ana should prove' most interesting from the standpoint of Russia's relationShip to England at tlio present time.

Miss Nina. T. Brentiiall's letters from the Young Women's Christian. Association in Calcutta are full of interest. She tells how she found the various Association branches in schools and colleges after their experience of six months without a student secretary. Some had lapsed, some had fallen off considerably, while some had held their own in spito of the lack of outside help. Miss Brentnail writes hopefully of future prospects, a special matter for thankfulness being the offer of. two Indian secretaries for work among their own' • countrywomen.

On behalf of the wounded troopers now in the Bowen Street Hospital, tho matron desires to return thanks to tho numerous thoughtful friends who' have sent tho following amongst other gifts l to tho men:—Books, magazines, illustrated papers, fruit, cakes, home-made bread, sweets, cream; marmalade, jam, chickens, flowers,' soup, matches, virol, lounge chair and three cushions, dress-ing-gowns, bed socks, slippers, nightingales, cigarettes, complete outfit for one man, pair of blankets, towels, end sheets. >

A monster children's carnival is to be held in the publio park on Wednesday next —Declaration Day—in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund, says our Mastor ton correspondent. Three flags are to be offered at auction, and it is antiqjpated that several thousand pounds will be raised. Tho' have fixed the Wairarapa goal for this fund at. £100,000, and there is every indication that the goal will be reached.

Our Greytown correspondent write a that the Greytown Ladies' and Men's Hockey Clubs combined held a very, successful dance in the Town Hall on Thursday' night, Miss Hodge supplying the music. _ An umber of soldiers from the Tauherinikau Camp were . present, and Messrs. J,> Bland, W. Muir, W. Gates, and M. Jackson made efficient M.C.'s.

Sister E. B. Eeid, of the Napier Hospital, who leaves to-day for Auckland en. route to the Old Country, has been the recipient of an umbrella and a cushion from the patients in the Stokes Ward, and a, dispatch box and a' serviette ring from the staff. ' Mr. and Mrs. D. Riddiford„ ofi Featherston, are visiting Napier. ■Among the visitors to Napier is Mrs< Heselline, of Ohristchurch.
