SOLDIERS ON LEAVE
REQUEST FOR CHEAP FARES. A' proposal that soldiers on leave fronJ any of tho camps bo allowed to travel either frco or at half rates on tho rail* ways was made to the Minister of Railways in the House of Representatives yesterday by Mr. L.. M. Isit-t. He also suggested' that some excursions might bo'arranged to Waikanae and Raugiotu.The Hon. W. H. Herries said tha Railway Department were putting op fresh trains from Pnlroerston to Rangiohit but the question of excursion rates was not being considered at present. The Railway Department wanted- all tho extra fares it could get. As to tho fares charged to soldiers; this was a matter of arrangement between the Dei fence Department and the.Railway I)e- > partment, •by which the Defcnco De* partment paid the faros. The Hon. J. Allen said he had authorised the Defence Department tp pay. half fares from Waikanae into town, and ho had also asked the Railway De-> partment to reduce the fares charged to something less than tho ordinary rate..
